1.1 INTRODUCTION
This course provides the training of visual inspectors to a level whereby they can teach the SDI Visual Inspection Procedure to others.
The course is to teach inspector instructor candidates the proper handling, filling, and inspection techniques including the identification of the various defective conditions that can lead to cylinder rejection or condemnation. A great deal more emphasis is placed on the knowledge base of the instructor candidate than is normally required of a cylinder inspector.
1.2 QUALIFICATIONS OF GRADUATES
Upon successful completion of this course, graduates may:
1. Teach others to visually inspect high-pressure scuba cylinders for defective conditions that could cause a cylinder failure.
1.3 WHO MAY TEACH
Who may teach this course?
2. Any active SDI/TDI VIP Instructor Trainer may teach this course.
1.4 STUDENT – INSTRUCTOR RATIO
3. No more than five (5) instructor candidates per demonstration setup (tools and tanks for the practical)
4. No more than twenty five (25) candidates per active SDI/TDI Instructor Trainer.
1.5 STUDENT PRE-REQUISITES
The Student must:
5. Be a minimum age of twenty one (21).
6. Be affiliated with an organization that has a high pressure air compressor and fill station
7. Be a qualified cylinder inspector by a nationally recognized agency.
8. Can prove that he/she has inspected a minimum of (fifty) 50 high-pressure cylinders.
9. Has been a Visual Inspector for a minimum of six (6) months.
1.6 COURSE STRUCTURE AND DURATION
The Student must able to:
10. Teach how to visually inspect high-pressure scuba cylinders for defective conditions that could cause a cylinder failure.
Course Structure:
11. SDI allows instructors to structure courses according to the number of students participating and their skill level.
12. Classroom lectures and demonstrations.
Duration:
13. Suggested minimum number of training hours is five (5).
1.7 ADMINISTRATIVE REQUIREMENTS
Administrative Tasks:
14. Collect the course fees from all the students.
15. Ensure that the students have the required equipment.
16. Communicate the schedule to the students.
17. Have the students complete the Liability Release and Medical history forms.
18. The Instructor should review the Liability Release and Medical Forms before starting on the course.
Upon successful completion of the course the Instructor must:
19. Issue a SDI Certification card. Complete and submit the Registration Form to SDI HQ.
Award card.
1.8 REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
The following equipment is the minimum required per inspection group while performing the visual inspection procedure. The instructor trainer may provide the required equipment.
20. A right angle mirror (dental mirror) with a magnification of 2X and having a diameter small enough to enter the tank neck.
21. An inspection light of sufficient size and intensity to illuminate the mirror and threads being inspected.
22. A light wand or other light source to illuminate the interior surfaces of the cylinder being inspected.
23. A right angle 1X power mirror and light source to enable the inspection of the interior crown area of the cylinder being inspected.
24. A straight and right angle pick and some gauging method to estimate the depth of any pitting noted on the cylinder walls.

1.10 REQUIRED SKILL PERFORMANCE AND GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
The student is required to display a degree of competency in the identification of various defect conditions presented to him by the instructor using actual cylinders with known defective conditions.
In order to complete this course, the student is required to:
40. Inspect three (3) cylinders with at least one (1) having a defective condition.
41. Satisfactorily complete the SDI/TDI Visual Inspection written examination.
42. Satisfactorily complete the SDI/TDI Visual Inspection Instructor written examination.
43. Demonstrate the ability to identify those conditions in a cylinder that would reject or condemn it.
