1.1 INTRODUCTION
This course is a Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation and First Aid combined into one program. It is designed to teach divers the proper techniques to safely administer CPR and evaluate and administer the correct First Aid for a given injury. The student will be qualified at the end of this specialty to:
1. Recognize and evaluate an emergency situation and a victim.
2. Know how to activate or alert the EMS.
3. Be able to provide one (1) person adult CPR and administer the proper First Aid to a non-breathing or injured person.
It is important that the student understand that a re-qualification course is required every two (2) years.
1.2 WHO MAY TEACH
1. Any active SDI/TDI CPR1st Instructor may teach this course.
1.3 STUDENT – INSTRUCTOR RATIO
Academic (Classroom-like conditions):
1. Unlimited, so long as adequate facility, supplies and time are provided to insure comprehensive and complete training.
Confined Water (Swimming pool-like conditions):
1. N/A.
Open Water (Ocean, lake, quarry, spring, river or estuary):
1. N/A.
1.4 STUDENT PRE-REQUISITES
1. Minimum age teen (10).
1.5 COURSE STRUCTURE AND DURATION
Course Structure:
1. SDI allows instructors to structure courses according to the number of students participating and their skill level.
Instructors are required to teach and evaluate all the following skills:
1. Perform CPR on a manikin
A. ABC’s
B. Rule of 2’s
1. First Aid - treat a simulated injury for each of “ The Six Basics”
C. Immobilize joint
D. Bandage wounded area
E. Cool area with running water
Duration:
1. The suggested number of training hours is one (1).
1.6 ADMINISTRATIVE REQUIREMENTS
Administrative Tasks:
1. Collect the course fees from all the students.
2. Ensure that the students have the required equipment.
3. Communicate the schedule to the students.
4. Have the students complete the Liability Release and Medical history forms.
5. The Instructor should review the Liability Release and Medical Forms before starting on the course.
Upon successful completion of this specialty the instructor must issue the SDI CPR1st Administrator Diver specialty experience card. The Instructor must:
1. Use either a SDI diver registration form or a Pre-paid Diver certification form to file for the specialty certification card if a SDI certification card is requested.
Award card and certificate.
1.7 REQUIRED EQUIPMENT
The minimum equipment requirements for students are as follows:
1. Manikin.
2. The CPR1st Student Slate (mandatory).
1.8 REQUIRED SUBJECT AREAS
The following topics must be covered during this course. The CPR1ST Student Slate is mandatory for use during this course but instructors may use any additional text or materials that they feel help present these topics.
1. What is CPR1st?
2. Define Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
3. How to perform CPR
A. Asses scene and victim – EMS and statement
B. ABC’s
C. Chin lift and gentle neck extension
D. Rule of 2’s
E. Continue CPR as long as needed
4. Define First Aid.
5. When and how should First Aid be administered
A. Assess injury and victim’s condition.
B. Assess for “ The Six Basics”
I. Breathing (absent) = CPR
II. Bleeding = Pressure
III. Broken = Immobilize
IV. Burns = Cool Water
V. Bites = Cover
VI. Blows = Watch
1.9 REQUIRED SKILL PERFORMANCE AND GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
In order to complete this course, students must:
2. Demonstrate an understanding of First Aid and CPR.
3. Recognize and evaluate an emergency situation.
4. Know how to activate or alert the EMS.
Note: The certification is good for two (2) years and must be renewed.
